Wataynikaneyap Transmission Project

Challenge

Completion of the second phase to connect 17 First Nation communities north of Pickle Lake and Red Lake with an estimated 1,500 km of new transmission line. The project objective was connecting remote First Nation communities in Northwest Ontario — currently serviced by diesel generation that is financially unsustainable — and has been identified as a priority in Ontario’s Long Term Energy Plan.

Access & terrain

Northern Ontario remote-access terrain, executed with heli-portable and track-mounted drilling equipment.

Scope

• Plan and execute completion of tower foundations through northern Ontario remote-access terrain using heli-portable and track-mounted drilling equipment — drill, install, and complete grouting
• Rock anchors and foundations for self-support towers
• Drill and install guy anchors
• Heli-portable geo-probe rock drilling for site examination to determine depth of rock formation and soil conditions at tower locations

Outcome

Phase 2 tower foundations and anchors delivered for a Long Term Energy Plan priority connecting remote First Nation communities off diesel generation.
